The Critical Role of Faith Groups in the International Climate Debate
Welcome to my faith based Climate Action Website! 2024 edition
The World Meteorological Organization State of the Global Climate report confirms that the year 2023 broke every single climate indicator. It was by far the warmest year on record. The global average temperature in 2023 was 1.45 ± 0.12 °C above the 1850–1900 average. Never have we been so close – albeit on a temporary basis – to the 1.5° C lower limit of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Concentrations of greenhouse gases continued to rise. Ocean heat content and sea level reached record observed highs, and the rate of increase is accelerating. Antarctic sea ice extent hit record observed lows, Key glaciers suffered record losses. The climate crisis is the defining challenge that humanity faces.
This will be an evolving source that will compile resources and information on the global climate crisis. These pages will provide links to articles, YouTube videos, websites, books, current information and downloadable materials related to the global dilemma we call climate change. I believe that the most relevant and effective reference for humanity today is the Holy Bible. As the impacts of a changing climate on our world escalate, The Bible is the best source of peace, hope, truth and Love to give us the faith and courage for the action ministry needed for our service to the increasing numbers of neighbors suffering as the result of the impacts of climate change. As you browse the site you may be encouraged to become involved with one or more groups currently engaged in the climate movement. Some of these groups will encourage specific actions or involvement in one of the many associated climate change impacts. I also encourage you: GET INVOLVED! So, my hope is for you to get involved and to use this site as a reference and a sort of "file cabinet" for materials to assist you in any and all of your efforts to help learn about and combat climate change. Today, Climate Change is being referred to as "The existential threat to all humanity".(Antonio Guterres, UN secretary general)
As the number of climate refugees continues to increase worldwide, the many opportunities to serve in creation care ministry also will increase. God is calling many people of faith into stewardship conserving and caring for His good creation for future generations. Genesis 1:1, John 1:3, Genesis 2:15
God, the creator, teaches us to honor his ways and his instructions. We must learn to honor his creation and allow life on earth to grow and regenerate. we must therefore disregard the forces that call us into harming the regenerative capacity of life and all ecosystems. Stan Rowe, a well known ecologist wrote: "We must remember that we are not in charge and we are a part of a vast living system on which we depend". The earth is not a merely a "resource" but our only "source".
My name is Larry Ryan and I retired as a technology education teacher after 33 years at Stephen Decatur High School in Worcester County, Maryland. My retirement has given me more time on my pilgrimage to learn more about a faith response to human caused climate change. It is also my interest to learn how the many afflictions caused by this human agency create the various responses by communities of faith.
Contact: ldryan2@gmail.com or Larry@creationcarede-md.org. Please share your ideas of how to better serve our neighbors (Luke 10:25-37) who have either been dislocated by disaster related to a severe storm or is dealing with the gloom of the dire predictions of climate change impacts that lay ahead. Together we can learn to be better stewards and better serve our God the creator and sustainer of all life.

“We as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a ‘thing-oriented society’ to a ‘person-oriented society.’ When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.” —Martin Luther King Jr., “Beyond Vietnam,” 1967
